Orishas Collection 2023
Ceramic with Mix Media
Chango represents male power and fortitude. Santa Barbara as Chango is the owner of fire, lightning, thunder and war, but he is also the patron of music, drumming and dancing. In Santeria, Chango is male and represents male beauty, virility, passion and power ergo his Manipura Chakra is so strong and exposed, no ego to hide.
Accented with gold glaze, the sculpture is mounted on a striking metal base, designed as a root to represent the grounding energy of the earth. The roots visually and symbolically illustrate the flow of energy from the earth, grounding Chnago being in the present moment.
The feet hold profound significance in this collection, symbolizing our connection to reality and the earth. They remind us of the importance of staying grounded, embracing life's challenges, and viewing each moment as an opportunity for growth and adventure.
In my artistic journey, I have chosen to sculpt three specific Orishas: Oshun, Chango, and Elewa. "In 1999, during a journey from Madrid to Ecuador, I made an unexpected stop in La Habana for a printing festival. This unplanned detour provided me with a unique opportunity to delve into the mystical world of 'The Santeria' and gain insight into its profound workings.
Through my art, I seek to capture the essence of this profound spiritual connection, portraying the Orishas as embodiments of strength, love, and protection. It is my hope that viewers will not only admire the aesthetic beauty of these sculptures but also reflect upon the deeper spiritual significance they hold, reminding us all of the importance of maintaining a delicate equilibrium as spiritual beings in our ever-changing world."
