Ceramic and Underglazed Colours
Inspired by Calypso, Goddess of the Sea, this striking sculpture captures a mystical, oceanic essence. Her flowing dress is adorned with intricate patterns, created using hand-carved wooden stamps from India and finished with oxides to evoke the natural textures of sea algae.
Her hair is styled in a bold, expressive manner, reminiscent of the iconic Frida Kahlo, symbolising both strength and beauty. While her head shares the hollow form found throughout the collection, its larger scale presented a unique structural challenge: it is delicately balanced atop the fragile, shell-like structure of her dress, which serves as its sole support.
This piece embodies a balance of power and fragility, nature and artistry, inviting contemplation and admiration from every angle.
My recent sculptures stand as a testament to my artistic journey and creative exploration. This series of layered and folded clay-like beings encapsulates the essence of my practice, reflecting the profound connection between the structures we create and the layers that constitute our very existence. Much like the intricate layers of tissue and water that form our physical bodies, these sculptures symbolise the layers of experiences that shape our consciousness—successes, failures, happiness, and pain—all interwoven to provide the foundational support that defines us.
